I've done some work with phpBB.
http://www.europaowners.org/ Looks plain jain but the Gallery has 10,000+ photos + built in list server
http://www.flyhummel.com/forums2/index.php Rebuilt a hacked and destroyed site
http://eastcoaststang.com/phpBB2/ Added Admin tools. Stopped BOT and spam registrations, Calendar, Timeslip Database.

You're going to need more Moderators than Admins.
Be careful who gets Admin access, Admins can turn your site to pudding rather quickly.

I'm not sure how much access this server gives you, but to add features like Timeslip database and calendar you need three things.
Admin Access to the forum
Access directly to the Forum MYSQL database
FTP access to the file storage location.

To Keep your important postings from drifting away over time.
IE if I post a new message it will bump your welcome message off the top of the list.
Click the welcome message
Than Edit
Than under Options Click Announcement
That will keep your messages at the top of the list...
I did Welcome To the GSRMC forum!
Stickies will be placed under Announcements...
